Genia Kühmeier was born in Salzburg and initially studied music and vocal teaching at the Hochschule „Mozarteum" in Salzburg before continuing her studies for solo voice at the University for Music in Vienna as a student of KS Margarita Lilova and KS Marjana Lipovšek. Further coaching with both continues to take place on a regular basis.

In January 2002, Genia Kühmeier was awarded the first prize at the 8th International Mozart Competition in Salzburg and in June 2003 she received the „Eberhard Waechter-Medaille" of the Vienna Staatsoper.

In summer 2002, Genia Kühmeier appeared at the festival in Aix-en-Provence in a production called A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM with arias by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and gave her début at the Scala in Milan in December 2002 in the role of Diane/IPHIGÉNIE EN AULIDE under the baton of Riccardo Muti. She returned to the Scala in Milan for the reopening of the Operahouse in December 2004 as Asterio in Salieri's L'EUROPA RICONOSCIUTA under the artistic direction of Riccardo Muti.

In January 2003 Genia Kühmeier became a member of the ensemble of the Vienna Staatsoper. Since then she performed such roles as Inès/LA FAVORITE, First Flower Maiden/PARSIFAL, Adina/L'Elisir d'Amore, First Maid/DAPHNE and Marzelline/FIDELIO. She made her long awaited début as Pamina in Mozart's ZAUBERFLÖTE in 2003, a role she also performed with great success in a new production at the Ruhr-Triennale under the baton of Marc Minkowski. In summer 2005 she made her highly acclaimed opera début at the Salzburg Festival in the role of Pamina under the artistic direction of Riccardo Muti, where she will also take part in a new production of Pierre Audi in 2006, again led by Riccardo Muti. In January 2006 she sang her highly acclaimed Ilia/IDOMENEO in a new production of the Vienna Staatsoper at the Theater an der Wien.

As a recitalist she had her outstanding début in September 2002 at the famous Schubertiade Festival in Schwarzenberg. Since then she performed Mozart & Haydn Masses with the Orchestra of the Operahouse of Zürich and Manfred Honeck, Mozart's REQUIEM at the Ruhr-Triennale under Kent Nagano, Strauss' VIER LETZTE LIEDER in an arrangement for String Septett with the Hyperion Ensemble in Vienna and Salzburg, KLÄRCHEN-LIEDER from Beethoven's EGMONT with Sir Roger Norrington and the Camerata Salzburg in Salzburg and Switzerland and Haydn's CREATION with Marko Letonja in Ljubljana. In July 2003 she could be heard in Händel's ALEXANDERFEAST and Purcell's ODE ON ST. CECILIA'S DAY with Nikolaus Harnoncourt at the styriarte festival.

In December 2003 Genia Kühmeier could be heard in Milano at the „Concerto di Natale" of La Scala with Riccardo Muti and in March 2004 she had an outstanding personal success with her début at the Musikverein in Vienna with Telemann's DER TAG DES GERICHTS under the artistic direction of Nikolaus Harnoncourt.

Further highlights of the 2003/04 season were: concerts at the Schubertiade Festival, several concerts at the styriarte festival with Nikolaus Harnoncourt, as well as her début at the Salzburg Festival with Mozart's C-MINOR MASS under William Christie.

In January 2005 she had an outstanding success as Ilia in a concert performance of Mozart's IDOMENEO under the baton of Daniel Harding within the Mozart-Festival in Salzburg. Under his direction she could further be heard at the Santa Cecilia in Rome with Mahler's 4TH SYMPHONY. In November 2005 she sang in Bruckner's TE DEUM with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under Seiji Ozawa at the Vienna Musikverein and in Rome, followed by concerts of Mozart's C-MINOR MASS with Nikolaus Harnoncourt at the Vienna Musikverein.

Other highlights of the current season are concerts with the Graz Philharmonic Orchestra and Leopold Hager as well as duo-recitals with Bernarda Fink in Graz and at the Schubertiade Schwarzenberg among many others.
